Cold Sores are generally caused by exposure to the Herpes simplex virus type 1 and are most easily caused by direct contact with a lesion or the body fluid of an infected individual, though transmission may also occur through skin-to-skin contact. While there is no cure for cold sores, there are effective treatments to minimize outbreaks and many ways in which one can prevent transmission. When treating cold sores, use doctor or pharmacist recommended treatments and keep the affected area clean using a gentle cleanser, and moist by using a mild lip moisturizer or balm.
